The Demos Platform is proud to announce during its Roșia Montană National Forum (August 30th – September 2nd 2018) that the Democracy and Solidarity Party – Demos is officially registered – line 172 of the Political Party Registry.
The Party is launched on the five year anniversary of the Roșia Montană solidarity protests against the cyanide-based mining project that the Roșia Montană Gold Corporation was trying to impose. These protests marked the start of what came to be known as „the Romanian Autumn.”
The Democracy and Solidarity Party – Demos is the electoral and political arm of the Platform that first appeared in the autumn of 2016, whose core values are equity, solidarity, equal opportunities, the fight against poverty, injustice, and social and economic inequality.
„We believe that, in a country where political and economic power is concentrated in the hands of a small group of people, it is our duty to rebuild society entirely, starting with the people, their rights, needs and aspirations. Today, we are one step closer to this goal. Today we are launching, here at Roșia Montană, a space for solidarity, democracy and the fight for basic human rights: the Democracy and Solidarity Party – Demos. This is the only real left-wing party in Romania,” one of the the speakers at the National Forum stated.
Demos’ main goal is the construction of a new approach to politics: one that is based on participation, on the needs of the people and one that is accountable to the people. The Party is born of the belief that Romania can no longer be governed by the old, cartel-style parties, that are built on a model of syphoning public resources and built-in mutual dependency of leaders and members, that exist to serve a political clientele, that have never took on a set of values and a clear political doctrine, and that have only ever been active during elections.
The founding members of Demos aim to succeed where traditional parties have failed, to mobilize constant, active participation of both party members and regular citizens.
